Travelling – teeth considerations ..

It hasn’t taken me long to start thinking of my next holiday, having only returned from Cuba and Mexico recently.  I enjoy exchanging travel stories with my clients.  But it’s surprising how often I hear of dental problems stowing away on people’s holidays.  In some parts of the world this can create a difficult predicament.  So here are a few teeth travelling tips.

Of course have a dental check-up before leaving.  Some teeth are time bombs that could start aching any time.  For example infected teeth, loose teeth, partially completed root canal treatments, ignored temporary fillings, crowns or bridges or teeth with a recent history of pain.  A timely dental visit will afford you some peace of mind.  A small intervention prior to leaving can make a big difference.   For folks with dentures, having a spare set is a must.

In the event of a Dental mishap overseas, ask around before attending any dentist.  In many countries Dentistry is considered more of a ‘learn on the job’ trade than a profession – something like a hairdresser, without formal qualification or compliance requirements.  This can be accompanied by poor cross infection control practices.  However usually a ‘western standard’ Dentist can be found by asking.  Large hotels and Cruise companies keep a list with respect to their location or next Port of call.  A simple course of antibiotics can also go a long way towards helping a tooth or gum infection.

So it’s lucky we provide your first Check, clean, fluoride and x-rays for all adults gap-free if you have any Dental extras cover*.  We also can provide spare sets of dentures using the ‘copy’ technique. We are welcoming new clients.
